Hiyya Hair Care Kit
Branding & Packaging

Problem
Muslim women who wear the hijab tend to neglect their hair. Wearing the veil for long hours during the day, especially if it’s tight, causes breakage and bald spots. This not only causes women to feel less confident within their own skin but also may cause women to resent the hijab.
Hiyya Hair Care Kit empowers hijabi women to feel beautiful and confident. We cover our hair as a sign of modesty and faith. This doesn’t mean we should give up on our hair.
Sketches & Mind Mapping
I aimed to capture ideas of empowerment, beauty, and confidence with this brand. I also wanted the Muslim identity to shine through this kit. I started by sketching different logo iterations both pictorial and typographic. The pictorial aspect conveys the duality of wearing the hijab and having beautiful hair. I loved this idea; luscious hair although it’s covered.
I experimented with different patterns, inspired by Islamic art and architecture. I looked at Arabic calligraphy such as those found in mosques in Syria and Iraq. The flow of the letters mimicked the flow of the long and healthy hair, which paired perfectly with the cursive typography. Thus, the final logo is below.
Several iterations were considered for the items that would go inside the box. I knew the end goal was to have a carefully curated kit that would empower women to take care of their hair. The hair oil was a definite element. After considering the main focus, which is healthy hair, I researched several hair care methods from experts and hair care product owners such as Carol’s Daughter. I decided to add a scalp massager, a bamboo under cap, a chiffon veil, and a detailed brochure to explain the hair care routine.
Reflection
I loved how the end result came out. The black background emphasized the colorful Islamic pattern. Simple layout but effective message.
I added some last-minute details such as the mirrors inside the box and a brochure. I printed a bellyband to go around the undercap and veil. The bellyband explains how the delicate material of these items helps with hair growth and health. I added a few stickers as well.
Lastly, I brought in a hijabi model to take some photos with my hair care kit.
